Observations on the Phil Robertson Controversy

Observations on the Phil Robertson Controversy

“An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, And he who is upright in the way is an abomination to the wicked” (Proverbs 29:27).

Our opening verse reveals much of the battle surrounding the controversial interview with Phil Robertson of Duck Dynasty fame. The fact that most consider it controversial is an indication of how far we have fallen as a nation. Sodomy was not spoken of in polite company. It was known as the unspeakable sin. Today we cannot escape this blight on our nation. Isaiah 5:20 could easily be viewed as America’s new cultural policy, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” In the new Amerika, vice has become virtue and virtue has become vice. As a result, America has plunged into a deep moral stupor.

For many years now, polarization has increased in our nation. The Duck Dynasty fiasco has brought this reality to the fore once again. The new Civil War is not between the North and the South, it is a battle between two seeds. Biblically, it is the seed of the serpent versus the seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15). The seed of the serpent demands, “My rights, my body, and my choice,” while the seed of the woman humbly bows and states, “Not my will, but thine be done.” Ideologically, the battle is between those who hold to traditional values (faith, family, and freedom) and those who hold to progressive values (a Marxist, Totalitarian worldview). Historically, those who pursued the lust of the flesh always persecuted those who pursued the Word and Spirit of God (Galatians 4:29). This pattern remains true to this day, as Phil Robertson can attest.

I suspect the interview was a set up. Typically, the thought police operate by asking a public Christian questions they know fly in the face of modernity. They also know the answer to their question, if the Christian stays true to the Word of God and does not compromise the truth. Once the Christian answers, the information is released, the homosexual machine kicks into high gear, the long knives are unsheathed, and the public Christian is toast. The goal of the thought police is to silence any opposition to criminal, sexual perversion.

The firestorm in the wake of Robertson’s comments prove the thought police messed with the wrong Christian. The dragon has been drawn from its lair and its fire breathing threats have been exposed. The homosexual agenda has never received such a backlash. Not even the Chick-Fil-A episode compares. A former homosexual, Greg Quinlan, weighing in on the hullabaloo revealed, “I am an EX-GAY, a former homosexual. I use to be part of the homo-fascist machine. The goal of ‘Gay Rights’ is NOT Equality it is Dominance. Absolute control of every aspect of society by silencing every voice in opposition to their chosen identification. Go PHIL! God bless the Robertson family!”

This comes from a man who was in the belly of the beast and knows the end game. The question is, does our nation know? Perhaps, in the aftermath of Robertson’s interview, the sleeping giant, traditional America, has awakened to the danger. Homosexuals do not seek tolerance, but supremacy. And if they succeed, America will not long endure.

Biblically, the spread of homosexuality means the “burning out” of man. However, in another very real sense, homosexuality speaks of the demise of civilizations. The proliferation of homosexuality heralded the end of empires (Rome, Greece, and the pagan nations in the Ancient Near East). America, it seems, is hell bent to join this League of Nations who collapsed from within due to moral corruption.

Observations

Though the interviewer, Drew Magary, used profanity and took the Lord’s name in vain in his GQ article, “What the Duck,” no one, Christian or pagan alike, criticizes him. Only Robertson is rude and crude. This selective moral outrage is revealing. The politics of ascribing false guilt is in full manifestation. Christian columnist Mark R. Rushdoony’s comments are applicable:

Man was created as a moral being, so he has to think in ethical terms. If he rejects God’s morality, he may distort it or redefine it entirely, but he must justify some behavior and condemn others as wrong…It [the state] often promotes immorality in the name of freedom to distract people from their own enslavement. It encourages a definition of liberty as freedom from morality, and classifies sins as human rights.

This mentality is in full display in the Robertson saga. Those enslaved by lust have no moral fortitude to stand for anything except for the right to be immoral. As a result, the double standards abound. Robertson merely voices a Biblical worldview on the topic of homosexuality and homosexuals have a conniption fit. He roughly quoted 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, which states:

Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

One of the most loving things a Christian can do is to warn those who practice such things, “There is a bridge out ahead. If you continue on the path you are on, you will plunge to your death and perish in your sin.” This loving warning (in an effort to preserve life, both here and in the age to come) is now considered hate speech.

Not a peep, however, is heard out of GLAAD or any other sodomite organization when Islam beheads or hangs homosexuals. Besides this blatant hypocrisy, when a homosexual states something that is considered hateful towards Christians, why the deafening silence? The reality is, homosexuals do not just speak disparagingly of Christians, they verbally threaten and physically assault Christians. If you think I’m exaggerating just Google “Homosexuals attack Christians.” Where is the public outcry and moral outrage. Again, not a peep. The duplicity stinks to the high heavens.

The Robertson controversy also reveals that bad form trumps substance. America is so addicted to image and appearance, we abandoned content and substance. As long as we look good who cares that our insides are full of dead man’s bones and everything unclean (Matthew 23:27). Indeed, the blind are leading the blind and America is in a ditch. Previously in Matthew, Jesus thundered, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also” (Matthew 23:25, 26).

For years, pro-life Christians have run into this same phenomenon. While holding signs of aborted babies, revealing the hard truth of abortion, many people attacked the use of our signs. When we asked them, “Are you more offended by these signs or are you more upset that this abortion mill is committing these brutal acts against innocent children?” We never got used to their response. Most of the time they would scream, “It is you! You are the problem!” As seen in abortion and now in the Robertson controversy, we are dealing with a major disconnect from reality, my friends.

G K Chesterton, in his own witty way, once stated, “Art, like morality, consists of drawing the line somewhere.” My, my, how those lines are blurred in these days. What are the consequences? Do we think it is a coincidence that polygamy, incest, bestiality, and pedophilia are now in line to receive their sexual orientation pass? If our nation cannot say no to the sin of homosexuality, how can we say no to any other deviant lifestyle?

Christians have warned of the proverbial “slippery slope” if we cave to this totalitarian agenda, for years. Psalm 73 describes the slippery slope in great detail. The Psalmist begins with his struggle with the prosperity of the wicked. Psalm 73:3 states, “For I was envious of the boastful, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” He goes on to describe their condition:

For there are no pangs in their death, but their strength is firm. They are not in trouble as other men, nor are they plagued like other men. Therefore pride serves as their necklace; Violence covers them like a garment. Their eyes bulge with abundance; They have more than heart could wish. They scoff and speak wickedly concerning oppression; They speak loftily. They set their mouth against the heavens, And their tongue walks through the earth.

The Psalmist is plagued by this condition and seeks understanding, “When I thought how to understand this, it was too painful for me” (Psalm 73:16.

Likewise, our wretched state has a lot of Americans troubled in their minds. Tyranny, cultural corruption, and economic chaos are on the rise. What can be done to stop this slide into perdition? Thankfully, the Lord does not leave the Psalmist in a state of depression. Psalm 73:17-19 reveals, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; Then I understood their end. Surely You set them in slippery places; You cast them down to destruction. Oh, how they are brought to desolation, as in a moment! They are utterly consumed with terrors.”

According to Psalm 73, how is America’s sexual rebellion going to end? The ungodly in our nation are on a collision course with the judgment of God. Some evils become so entrenched in a nation, they can only be eradicated by two possibilities — national repentance or national judgment. What do you think our future holds?

Another issue that caused an eruption was Robertson’s comparisons of homosexuality with other transgressions. The homosexuals were aghast, and the secular media pundits appalled, that Robertson dared to place the sin of homosexuality in the same category with other sins discovered in the 1 Corinthians 6 passage. How can someone be so backwards as to equate loving consent between two people of the same sex, with these other transgressions? Who does this man think he is? How crude and rude. Newsflash people: Robertson is not the source for these designations. God’s Word places homosexuality with a list of other sins that, if practiced, will ban people from heaven.

In fact, the Old Testament placed homosexuality in the same category as incest, bestiality, and child sacrifice and the shedding of innocent blood. God was very clear on how He would respond to men and nations if they openly practiced these abominations. Leviticus 18:21-25 states warns:

And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord. You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination. Nor shall you mate with any animal, to defile yourself with it. Nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it. It is perversion. Do not defile yourselves with any of these things; for by all these the nations are defiled, which I am casting out before you. For the land is defiled; therefore I visit the punishment of its iniquity upon it, and the land vomits out its inhabitants.

Here is our problem. Though this is true Biblically, too many people in and outside of the church believe they are wiser than God, more holy than God, more loving than God, and more compassionate than God. Perhaps this is why the Apostle Paul declared, “Let God be true and every man a liar” (Romans 3:4).

Another telling dilemma is how homosexuals are the new experts on Christianity. “Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe,” GLAAD spokesperson Wilson Cruz said. This is like the KKK redefining what is true about our black brothers and sisters or Hitler redefining what is true concerning the Jews. It is utter nonsense, but tragically there are plenty of Americans who swallow this Orwellian double speak hook, line, and sinker.

The homosexuals are also up in arms about Robertson’s colorful, yet anatomically correct assessment of the human body and its proper functions. In the GQ article, Robertson merely offered instruction on the “birds and the bees.” God created us male and female. In other words, He created us as heterosexuals. Our body’s design discloses its function. Jesus taught, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This is not limited to the compatibility of the different sex organs, however. That is obvious. This teaching also includes the scientific fact that when these organs function sexually, they produce life. They produce a unique “one,” a child from the blessed union.

Homosexuals cannot do this naturally. This is why historically, sodomy was considered not just ungodly but unnatural. These unnatural sexual practices account for the severe consequences that fall upon those who engage in homosexual acts. Their minds and bodies suffer from an assortment of maladies. God did not create man’s sexual organ to mix seed with the rectum, where excrement is eliminated. This act produces death. Nature itself shouts, “Treat your bodies according to design!” Tragically, most are putting their fingers in their ears and mumbling deceptions as they rush headlong into oblivion.

A lot of people wonder why the church should treat the sin of homosexuality, which the Bible calls an abomination, different than other sins. There are a number of reasons why. I want to concentrate on just two of them.

First, we must remember all sin is the breaking of God’s moral laws (1 John 3:4). In this sense, all sin is the same. Every sin “misses the mark” of God’s holy, righteous standards and falls short of his glory (Romans 3:23). Not all sin, however, solicits the same response from heaven. For instance, God does not threaten to turn people over to a reprobate mind for every sin. Yet, He warns those who practice homosexuality that this is a very clear and present danger (Romans 1:26–28). It does not mean that those enslaved by homosexual lust cannot be freed and forgiven. If the person repents, God’s tender mercies are present to redeem. It simply means this particular sin is far more dangerous to humanity.

Second, when you examine the other sins in the 1 Corinthians 6 passage, we do not see people publicly organizing to sanitize their wrong doing. Where are the fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, thieves, covetous, drunkards, revilers, and extortionists groups clamoring for acceptance and supremacy? Are they developing their own caucuses and promoting “You-name-the-sin Pride Parades?” Why is it only homosexuals parade their sin like Sodom (Isaiah 3:9)?

Final Word to Homosexuals

I know deep down those trapped by homosexual lust also crave love. If you are one that needs love, it must be rooted in the truth that sets you free and not in a lie that reinforces you in a sinful, destructive lifestyle. Proverbs 27:6 reveals, “Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.” Sure, the church in America can agree with your gay lifestyle and then watch you perish in eternity. Would that be considered love, my friend, or would it be considered hate?

When true Christians cry out to warn you to repent and be reconciled to God through the merits of Jesus Christ, that is not hate calling you; it is love. Real love empowered by truth can fulfill the deepest longings of your heart, as you are accepted by the One who matters most — the God who created you, the Savior who died for you. Many homosexuals have received this truth and have changed. They married people of the opposite sex and have children today. As one ex-homosexual, Michael Glatze, recently stated, “Homosexuality is death, I choose life.”

You must understand that men will never find God’s love or life in the arms of other men, nor women in the arms of other women. Remember this as well: Jesus did not die on a cross, suffer an agonizing death, and shed His blood to enable you in your sin, with all its severe consequences. He died to set you free from your sin. That is why the Bible, speaking specifically to homosexuals, declares the good news, “And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:11).

Yes, you are enslaved, just like all sinners; but you can be delivered. That old man with its tyrannical lust can lose its dominion and a new man who has a heart after God can emerge. This is my prayer for you today, that you will experience these soul-liberating truths as you call upon the name of Jesus, confess, and forsake your sins. Only then will you receive the mercy that will flood your soul with the love of God (Proverbs 28:13). Open your heart, be not afraid, agree with God about the sin of homosexuality, cry out for deliverance, and receive the abundant pardon that comes from God’s amazing grace in Jesus’ precious name!
